A Patriotic Chinese Story

Using real life politics and a failed attempt of a civilian protest “air raid” mission as a basis, author Wang used his extensive military aviation insight and created a credible story of how a couple Taiwanese Air Force pilots took on a rouge mission parachuting a group of Taiwanese-Americans to the territorially-disputed Senkaku/Diayutai Islands and the political firestorm they created as a result.
Wang took on Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, and American government’s “status quo” policy on the Senkaku/Diayutai Islands and pushed it beyond the boundary. He gave it a “what if…” scenario. When an incident such as this occurs, what would each of the governments do? Would there be war in the region? Which side would the Americans choose? Spoiler alert, the Taiwanese-American author concluded the story with a decidedly patriotic Chinese ending.
The first 40% or so of the book, setting up the characters and putting together the backstory, read through rather slowly. Some of the passages, in particular the dialog exchanges and the character setup, did not flow too well. In addition, I caught two typos. Perhaps something got lost in the translation. Nevertheless, once the story is set up and the mission got underway, everything picked up, awkward verbiage disappeared, and it read through like an action movie!
If you have an interest in Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese politics, their military, and the American view of the region, then this story is for you. Wang used his extensive military aviation knowledge, peppered it with contemporary facts made this story convincingly realistic. Recommended.

A very Entertaining Read

A well written and entertaining political thriller centered around the territorial dispute between Taiwan, China and Japan over the Senkaku Islands. The pace and the story telling call to mind the work of Tom Clancy and I would highly recommend this book to fans of his work or anyone with an interest in learning about the background of an issue that most have heard of, but few are familiar with.

A story wanting to be heard. A dream not yet lived. A struggle between nations. An intense political drama unfolds within the cockpit. Wang does well giving front seat details of flying and repercussions a pilot and crew must take on for pride and justice.
