About the Author
Georges C. Benjamin, MD, is well-known in the world of public health as a leader, practitioner and administrator. Benjamin has been the executive director of the American Public Health Association, the nation's oldest and largest organization of public health professionals, since December 2002. He came to that post from his position as secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Benjamin became secretary of health in Maryland in April 1999, following four years as its deputy secretary for public health services. As secretary, Benjamin oversaw the expansion and improvement in the state s Medicaid program.

Certainly worth the money for those interested in the topic whether you are just a beginning in the history of healthcare or a season veteran. Good mix of visuals (the 'toons) and backstory on the various writers and where they came from (national political climate). Only weakness may be the highly evident progressive (Liberal) tone of the book...although that is to be expected and/or appreciated given the subject matter!

SCINTILLATING!...5+++

There is just nothing like a gifted author, and Anne Barbour is that!

I was quickly captured with this comment by our rake one dawn, suffering ennui following a rather demanding night: "Good God, he thought in dismay, had it come to this? Was he actually weighing his potential mistresses on a comfort scale?"

Our rake, Lord Bythorne, just doesn't stand a chance. He's beset by a charming, but recalcitrant ward, Chloe, and has his encounter of a lifetime with Miss Hester Blayne, England's premier feminist. He doesn't know it yet, but he's done for.

This tale is just perfect - fluid, graceful writing; witty narrative; humorous dialogue; LOL situations, and a sweetly developed love story.

We come to know the protagonists so well, and they're likeable. Even the secondary characters are explored in satisfying depth. The story moves at a spanking pace - not a single 'draggy' page.

And.....it is "period perfect"!

I must be in a certain mood to read some novels, but not this one. It's great! Right up there with my favorites. I hope you enjoy it - I did, immensely.

An enjoyable romp with agreeable characters

This is the first book by Anne Barbour I have read, and it would certainly encourage me to seek out more of her books. This is a very entertaining story, with believable and likeable main characters, and also some supporting characters who are very well developed and could even deserve a story in their own right (Robert and Barbara in particular, though possibly also Chloe and John).
Hester and Thorne at first appear to be poles apart, but he is less shallow than she believes him to be and she is less of a harridan than he expects her to be. Even still, when they meet and get to know each other, the sparks fly in all directions! The sexual tension is palpable in some scenes, and Barbour handles the relationship development extremely well. She shows the unwilling but deep friendship which grows between them in parallel to their mutual attraction, and the way in which they come to trust each other, much to their surprise.
And when jealousy rears its ugly head... watch out!

Lovely traditional Regency with a lot of plot for a shorter story

This book is a great traditional Regency. Hester Blayne is a radical who is content to write her treatises in her country cottage. It's not until Charles Trent, Earl of Bythorne (known to his intimates as Thorne), shows up on her doorstep that she realizes that the new "maid" whom she has hired is actually Thorne's wayward ward, Chloe. Quite the rakehell, Thorne has no idea how to deal with his ward. Since Thorne sees that Chloe will have nothing to do with his highhandedness and, in fact, appears to listen to the blistery Miss Blayne, Thorne determines that he must somehow bring Miss Blayne with them to London so that she may provide a guiding hand to young Chloe. Through a series of events, the three return to London, where Hester and Thorne have to navigate the waters of London society...and their feelings for one another.

There are a lot of secondary characters in this book that add to the story, and the secondary romances in particular tie into the story well. Thorne has arranged a match for Chloe, but she resists. He's in love with her, though, and their courtship flows throughout the book. Also, Thorne has been casually courting Lady Barbara for years. In the course of the Season, Hester also finds herself with a suitor. (Thorne can't stand it, and what is this...jealousy??) Little do they know, however, that Hester's suitor is Lady Barbara's erstwhile suitor.

I really like this book - it's one of my "keeper" traditional Regencies that I like to pull out every once in a while to read through my favorite parts. Thorne is a fairly typical rakish hero who doesn't quite know how to handle the firebrand who is Hester Blayne. Hester is pretty wonderful. She's independent, has strong opinions, and she refuses to fall for "The Smile" whenever Thorne tries to pull it out and use it on her. The ending is really sweet and romantic, and it's also satisfying to see the secondary romances between Chloe and John and Robert and Barbara come to an amiable conclusion.

Love reading aloud these new education Dr Seuss books.

We have the new learning Dr Seuss Books on horses, maps and anatomy. As a parent, grandparent, sibling or teacher; they are fun! to read aloud to children. They contain a surprising amount of informative content. Beginning Geography workbook Grades K-2 (also sold on Amazon) and this book combined make great teaching tools for 4-6 year old children. We recently did 3 activities from the geography book with a small group of home school children ages 4,5,6. The same night I was reading this book to daughter, and it happened to review the "compass rose", using "scale" to measure maps, and use of symbols on maps that we had studied during the day with the geography work sheets.

Great book, more in-depth than others of the Seussian genre

This book was basically great, although some of the Dr. Seuss-style rhyming was just a tad confusing in the map-reading examples. I'd recommend adults read it over first, and if you are reading to--or with--kids who aren't familiar with the Seuss style, just skip over some of the names. Other kids may enjoy that part.

Overall this is a great book on map reading. Parents may want to read it with their kids before going on a road trip, have them practice some map-reading skills at home (including a blueprint-style map of the rooms in their home), then try to find some very simple maps for the kids to read on the road, depending on their ages.

This summer we organized some day camps to help young family members learn to read, which included numerous treasure hunts to practice reading skills. On the final day we read this book, then the big blowout treasure hunt led them to a hidden bag of puzzle pieces. When they put the puzzle together, it was a map of a couple rooms in our house, with red arrows pointing to the location of their next clue. The kids loved it (and they didn't mind the treasure chest full of little prizes after the final clue either)! I think it reinforced how much they could learn by reading books, and how they could put that knowledge to use.

I haven't seen many kids' books that teach map reading, so this is a great addition to a child's library, especially if you help them follow up with some practice. We females tend to have brains that don't automatically process maps, so this may be especially helpful for young girls--if they're anything like me, anyway!

Love the Learning Library Books

We are huge Dr. Seuss fans, and these modern-day adaptations are so clever. They take the rhyming patterns and characters from the classic Seuss books and turn them into educational books on nearly every topic. I think by now we have almost every book in the very large set. We've learned about maps, dinosaurs, weather, pets. You name it, this series covers it. I learn almost as much as my kids when we read them together. We literally have hundreds of books in our home library, but these are the only books my 5 yr old and 7 yr old want to read.

Great Comic. Waste of Money on Kindle.

This is for the Kindle edition. Complete waste of money. Comic pages can not be enlarged, but individual panes can. Control appears random. Comic will not fill up Kindle/iPad screen. There's about 1" of wasted white space that you can do nothing with. Very annoying. I looked forward to this. I paid DC for it. It's sad when the official version of a great work basically says you would have done better searching for someone's bootleg .pdf on the net. Errr...

Never get's old reading this classic.

I was 11 years old when i found a famous first edition reprint of this 1939 classic. i couldn't stop reading it over and over, so when i saw i could down load it. I enthusiastically just pressed the button. the minute it was on my Ipad and i could read it again, I was 11 years old again and the stories felt as new and exciting as they did back then.

I love Superman

As a kid I loved DC comics and especially Superman. The usual story of how Superman saves the day. I bought this for the kindle and it looks like a real comic. You can only read page by page. As always good story and artwork.

intimate portrait of Intrigue and love in the French court

Book number 12 in 1001 books you must read before you die. Known as the first novel written in French it relates the story of courtiers in the court of Henri II of France around the end of his reign in 1559. Written a century later with a number of known historical characters including Catherine de Medici (Henri's wife), Mary Stuart, the Dauphine's wife, known as the Reine Dauphine and fleeting mentions of the ascension to the throne of England by Elizabeth I the story is of a young married woman the Princess of Cleves thrown into the political and romantic intrigue of the royal court who attempts not to be drawn into an affair with a much admired and sought after courtier, the Duc de Nemours whom she has fallen in love with. In trying to control her passion she turns to her husband for assistance but as could be predicted it all turns to custard with the husband's jealousy and the lover attempting to sway her while she tries to ignore and control her feelings. The book has some wonderful intimate moments describing the emotional turmoil of the wife in her struggles, the husband's attempts to treat the wife's confession with the compassion that it deserves, and the Duc's attempts to observe the Princess from afar, hoping eventually she will turn to him after her husband's death. I think I could have done with a better translation - buying the free kindle version without foot notes in novels published a few centuries ago is a bit hit and miss!

Much Better Than Part One

I found part one to drag a little. Almost as if I already knew everything that would happen. Stu is a bit weak and a bit naive and right from the beginning the reader can see that the rich, self-involved alpha males are going to take advantage and use him without his knowledge or consent. Then the whole story changes.

By the time part two begins, this is now a gripping and magical journey. Stu is now Sue and reveling in his/her musical inventiveness and performing genius. As Sue's confidence and professionalism grows, so does her fame and power over audiences. Parts two, three and four are a dramatic and delightful story, much less predictable than part one.

All four parts of On the Road-Again are a single novel, albeit a huge one, and should be read together. As a single story, this is a very good story with a long slow start.

Edited to add: although a big deal is made throughout the book about women who rock, example Chrissy Hynde, and although the protagonist writes her autograph, "Rock Hard, Suzie", no mention is ever made of Suzi Quatro or her monumental album "Rock Hard".

In a word... Great!

I've read a lot of SciFi/Fantasy and this series is one of the best. Most of the books being written today have very predictable plot twists; not this one! I agree whole heartedly with the reader from Louisiana - Mr Shelley, please let us know what happens to Gil next!
If you can't find these books in your local used book stores, try Amazon's ... used book location service. I've had good luck with both.

Read this trilogy OVER and OVER!

I first stumbled across these books over a decade ago. Since then, I have read the series to myself several times. I have also read them outloud to my wife. (She loves my Uncle Parthet voice, ha!)
The author's writing style makes EXTREMELY easy and relaxed reading. A blend of wit, sarcasm, and action make the books FUN FUN FUN!
The story is interesting.
The characters are loveable!
Everything has its place.
I whole heartedly recommend this trilogy! My copies have been passed around among my friends - and everyone agrees - these are GREAT!
My wife is re-reading The Son of the Hero for the third time now!

Amazing Books

I first came upon this series at my local library and fell in love with all three books instantly. Ten years later they still remain my favorite books and hold the most coveted spot on my shelf. I highly recommend them to anyone and everyone. The story line is fantastic and carries smoothly through all three books. I love the main character Gil and enjoyed following his quests into Shelly's strange world. The story line is unique and perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy novels and timetravel-esque books.
